Skamper Ramp in Action

THE PROBLEM:
Did you know that.... in the US over 71% of households own at least one pet. That breaks out to almost 75 million pet dogs, 88+ million pet cats, and 24+ million "small pets" in those households, totaling approx. 183 million pets! Pets are family members, and rely on their owners to keep them safe.

The odds of a pet drowning, according to the American Pet Association, are approximately 1 out of 1,028 each year in the US alone, where over 53% of pet owners have a pool and/or spa.

Did you know that... over 22% of U.S. households have more than one dog, and more than 19% of U.S households have more than 2 cats?? [avma.org 2007]

That means that over 41%, on average, have 2 dogs and/or cats, and spend a lot of money to buy and care for them.

The health and safety of our pets account for $24.5 billion in annual veterinarian bills [avma.org, 2007], and $65+ billion annual pet product sales [appma.org, 2006]. Keeping pets safe is obviously important!

The problem with water hazard is very real but just as easily preventable.
When a pet or other animal jumps or falls in the water, they can swim for a while (some more than others) but, without a way out, they can drown from exhaustion brought on by panic or fatigue.

The fact is, pools are perilous for pets and no pool owner wants anything to drown in their pool, whether it is a critter or, more especially, a pet that is considered an important part of a family! Though some drownings occur by day, they occur most often at night leaving the pool owner or lakefront resident with that cruel surprise of a dead pet or animal floating in their pool or pond.

If a pool fence or door is left open, if there is no protective fence or cover, or if no one is around to hear an alarm when an animal gets in, what then? No matter how careful you are, there is always the possibility that something can happen.

That's exactly why Skamper-Ramps were invented, why federal legislation regarding pool safety measures is pending and "Pet Safety" is one of the fastest growing segments in the Pet Industry!!

In the case of vinyl-lined pools, one of the more expensive things to replace or repair is the vinyl liner.... And this is especially frustrating when the damage was caused by a frantic animal trying to escape from drowning! What can prevent this occurance? Leaving a Skamper-Ramp installed to make sure no critter is trapped and punctures the liner.

THE SOLUTION:
Skamper Industries LLC manufactures and distributes the animal water escape device, drowning prevention product known as Skamper-Ramp® - in two sizes, world-wide: Original and, since 1 December 2007, the new blowmolded Super Skamper-Ramp.

This patented, proven and award-winning (and deceptively simple looking!) device -- US Patent # 664389, Int'l Patent Pending, Trademark registration # 2867405 -- is attractive, affordable, lightweight, versatile, robust and, most importantly, works--even when no one is there to help! Skamper-Ramp safeguards against finding any dead animals pets or critters in your pool, protecting them from drowning by providing a way to exit (or scamper out of!) the water on their own. This providing invaluable peace-of-mind to pet owners and animal lovers.

The product is Green because it is recyclable and 100% made in America!!

Super Skamper-Ramp® - the redesigned, larger size, water escape ramp for frequent use by any animals - to help prevent drowning. This patented product is now more robust, elegant, and functional than before thanks to blowmolding the parts. Super Skamper-Ramp has fewer parts - no nuts and bolts to lose - it snaps together easily. It is appropriate for regular use by any animal, even large animals up to 220+ lbs, or for frequent use by swimming animals going in or out of the water. Use with most docks, many boats, walled ponds, pools, reservoirs, etc. It protects vinyl-lined pools from animal puncture - works with most docks with wooden sides - is appropriate for use with many boats (especially smaller outboards), and even protects animals walking on thin ice or non-permeable pool covers that sink with snow/ice build-up..... Super Skamper-Ramp was designed specifically for pets greater than 40 lbs for use in pools and ponds - or most any size animal to get out of canals, along bulkheads, most docks and many boats. This ramp floats and is very strong, however owners of older, arthritic, or rehabbing animals may want to attach flotation noodle segments to the end submerged in water for even greater buoyancy.

All living things see white. When trapped in water, if there is a Skamper-Ramp installed they will find it to escape or at least keep their heads above water. Vinyl liners will not be torn/shredded. Pets, dogs, cats, frogs, ferrets, possums, raccoons, ducklings, squirrels, chipmunks, mice, snakes, spiders.... pool safety, water safety, escape ramp, boats, and docks.

Possums, squirrels, chipmunks, baby racoons, duckling, snakes, all find their way out with a Skamper-Ramp.

Once the D-ring clips are attached to the pool deck, the rope is tied so that the back edge and wings of the Skamper-Ramp rest snugly against the pool wall and the "nose" of the ramp is at least 2" beneath the water surface.

Great for cats, too!

Attachment
We suggest attaching the ramp to the pool’s deck with the stainless steel D-ring-clips and rope provided.  The ramps have a knot tied as close to the ramp surface as possible in order for it to maintain its orientation.

There are two sets of holes in the ramp for threading the rope through, in order to have a snug fit to the wall (including under a deep coping, such as with a steel sided vinyl wall.)

Some people choose to use existing railings, pool cover anchors, or water leveler covers, rather than drilling into their deck. In this case, be sure the rope tie-downs are not spread much farther apart than the width of the ramp for optimal performance.

The ramp should float/hang in the water at an angle that is approximately 30-degrees below horizontal so that the ramp’s round “nose” is submerged by a few inches.

Lead-plug or stainless steel anchors with non-rusting screws are suggested for poured/solid decks; non-rusting bolts and nuts with a lock washer are suggested for hollow decks.  Customers should check with their pool service company if they are unsure what method to use!

Directions for assembly and attachment are provided with every Skamper-Ramp.

Vinyl Liner Pools
Skamper-Ramps are designed to keep an animal’s claws from slashing the plastic walls of vinyl liner pools as they attempt escape. Each corner radius is designed to protect--not puncture--the vinyl liner. For extra buoyancy we suggest using flotation  “noodle” sections attached with plastic tie-downs. While we haven't had anyone report a problem but we understand and respect the fear of replacing a liner. In order to minimize rub, if you have it or can get it, we suggest doubling the vinyl wall layer in the area where the ramp will be installed. If that is not possible you could tape the edge of the ramp that will be closest to the pool wall with duct tape or waterproof vinyl pool tape. We are in the process of developing a vinyl pool kit for this.

In the case of thick coping/a deep overhanging deck, be sure to rethread the rope through the holes below the logo, in order to pull the ramp snugly under the overhang, and close to the pool wall.

Training a Pet to Use Your Skamper-Ramp®
Just a note about pets and animal safety.  While wild animals seem to know instinctively how to use Skamper-Ramp in an emergency, some of our more domesticated pets, like dogs and ferrets, might need to be shown how the ramp can help them when in peril.

We suggest you take your pet into the pool with you and “help” them see how they can climb out of the pool using your Skamper-Ramp. This is facilitated by putting one of their favorite treats on the ramp near the pool edge and another on the pool deck, so they go up the ramp trying to get at the treat. It’s fun to take them in for a second demonstration and see how well they have learned the “drill” during their first visit.
